Dr. Susan L. McElroy, M.D.

A nationally recognized researcher and educator, Dr. Susan McElroy was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School prior to her time in Cincinnati.
Dr. McElroy is internationally known for her research in bipolar illness, eating disorders, obesity, impulse control disorders and pharmacology. As Chief Research Officer she currently oversees multiple ongoing studies in bipolar disorder, major depression and binge eating disorder.
Dr. Susan McElroy has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including being recognized among the Best Mental Health Experts by Good Housekeeping Magazine, Top Doctors in America, and Top Doctors in Cincinnati by Cincinnati Magazine. Additionally, she was a recipient of the Phillip L. Isenberg Teaching Award for dedication and excellence in the education of residents, McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School; the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching of residents, University Hospital, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; and a co-recipient of the Gerald L. Klerman Young Investigator Award of the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association.
She is active locally and nationally in the mental health field, and serves on numerous scientific advisory boards, including boards for the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) Cincinnati and Ohio chapters. Additionally, she has served as reviewer or editorial board member of a number of professional journals, including Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), American Journal of Psychiatry, Depression, Bipolar Disorders, Journal of Affective Disorders, and Bipolar Disorders.
She has published more than 500 academic articles, books, book chapters, abstracts and professional letters in the fields of psychiatry and clinical neurology.

- Novel psychopharmacologic agents in the treatment of mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders
- Phenomenology, epidemiology, biological abnormalities and treatment of bipolar disorders.
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome and related side effects of antipsychotic agents.
